Truman Scholarships topic of Oct. 11 lecture

Louis Blair, Truman Foundation executive secretary, will discuss Truman Scholarships available to qualified Brigham Young University students Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. in 3380 Wilkinson Student Center.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards $30,000 scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service and wish to attend graduate or professional school. The foundation seeks students involved in community service and leadership.

Truman scholars must be nominated by a faculty representative and be in the upper quarter of their junior class.

BYU Provo most recently had two Truman Scholars in 2003—Ryan Keller and Peter Stone—and BYU Hawaii in 2004 had Alisi K. Langi selected as a Truman Scholar.

During his visit to BYU, Blair will meet with students interested in applying for the Truman scholarship, as well as the Rhodes, Gates and Cambridge scholarships.

“Louis Blair will help those giving the scholarship understand more about our students and their ability to compete with Ivy League schools,” said Carolyn Tuitupou, assistant dean of BYU undergraduate studies.
