"Thunder in the Valley" next in BYU film archive series Nov. 19

Continuing its series honoring movies made in Utah, the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Archive will screen “Thunder in the Valley” starring Edmund Gwynn Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium.

Also at the screening, Lee von der Esch, director of the Utah Office of Tourism and head of the Utah Film Commission for 20 years, will speak about past, current and future film production throughout Utah.

Theater doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Children ages 8 and older are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

This 1947 film is about a crusty sheepherder, played by Academy Award-winner Gwynn, and a marauding sheepdog who wreaks havoc in a small community. The area of Blue Springs in Garfield County stands in for the Scottish highlands in this Technicolor drama that pits neighbor against neighbor. It was based on the best-selling novel “Bob, Son of Battle” by Alfred Olliphant.

James D'Arc, curator of the BYU Motion Picture Archive and author of “When Hollywood Came to Town: A History of Moviemaking in Utah,” will provide behind-the-scenes information on the making of the film.

The BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series is co-sponsored by the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson. A complete schedule of upcoming showings is available online at sc.lib.byu.edu.

For more information on the series, contact James D’Arc at (801) 422-6371 or james_darc@byu.edu.
