Three School of Music faculty to perform recital Oct. 5

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty will join in a concert Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The concert is free.

Geralyn Giovannetti, oboe; Claudine Bigelow, viola; and Jeffrey Shumway, piano, will be performing a number of classical pieces from the 19th century.

They will begin the concert by playing the Trio in G major by Adolf Ruthardt and the Serenade in F minor by Robert Kahn. After a brief intermission, they will perform “Sarabande and Rigaudon” by Arthur Foote, “Poem: A Nymph’s Complaint  for the Death of Her Faun” by Felix White and “Three Pieces” by Alan Richardson.

Giovannetti is a member of Orpheus Winds and associate director at the School of Music. She graduated with a doctorate in performance from the University of Western Ontario and has since performed around the globe. She has also been nominated for a Juno Award by the Canadian Music Awards.

Bigelow is head of viola studies and chamber music coordinator at BYU. She received her doctorate  from the University of Maryland in performance and pedagogy in viola. She has played with the Utah Symphony, the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra and the National Chamber Orchestra and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Shumway is the head of keyboard studies and received his doctorate from Indiana University, receiving Most Outstanding Pianist and Most Outstanding Musician honors. He also studied at The Juilliard School and garnished second place in the 1977 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. He is a member of the American Piano Quartet and recipient of the Gina Bachauer Medal of Artistic Distinction.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
