"Thinking about Torture" topic for David M. Kennedy Center seminar Dec. 9

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University will host a panel discussion, “Thinking About Torture,” during an Interdisciplinary Seminar Wednesday, Dec. 9, from noon to 2 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Each presenter will be given 15 to 20 minutes at the podium, followed by a Q&A with discussion. Cory Leonard, assistant director of the David M. Kennedy Center, will moderate the discussion. Joining him will be:

David Kirkham, senior fellow for Comparative Law and International Policy at the BYU International Center for Law and Religion Studies. He is an adjunct member of the faculties of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and the Department of Political Science.

Darren G. Hawkins, chair of the Political Science Department at BYU. His recent publications include "Power and Interests at the International Criminal Court" in SAIS Review of International Affairs and "Protecting Democracy in Europe and the Americas" in International Organization.

Eric T. Jensen, visiting assistant professor of law at Fordham University School of Law. He has most recently served as chief of international law in the Office of the Judge Advocate General with the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C.

Alden R. Stradling, a particle physicist with the European Organization for Nuclear Research and post-doctoral fellow at the University of Texas-Arlington. Stradling is also part of the ATLAS team working with the Large Hadron Collider outside of Geneva, Switzerland; and

John Hughes, a professor of communications at BYU and former editor of the Deseret News and the Christian Science Monitor. Hughes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. He also served as U.S. assistant secretary of state and as assistant secretary-general of the United Nations.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
