Taal Yatra to bring Indian music, culture to BYU Sept. 13

Brigham Young University will host Taal Yatra, an innovative Indian musical ensemble, in “An Odyssey into Rhythm” Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Tickets are $11, $8 for BYU students, faculty and staff and $10 for senior citizens and BYU alumni. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting byuarts.com.

The ensemble creates a modern and fresh integration of the sounds of drum sets and keyboards in a repertoire that symbolizes the synergy of several streams of Indian music.

The musicians, all natives of India, will present “Raag-taal-kalpana,” which means scale-rhythm-imagination. Tabla maestros Talwalkar and Satyajit will use novel rhythm patterns in the ensemble’s vocal and instrumental performances.

The concert is sponsored in part by BYU’s College of Humanities and the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

For more information visit www.sureshtalwalkar.com or contact Ken Crossley at (801) 422-9348.
