Students reach out in service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Before Brigham Young University's "Walk of Life" celebration of the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, students and others will participate in the annual Community Outreach Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

BYU's Center for Service and Learning has organized the day, which provides many service opportunities on the BYU campus and in the community. The activities are free and students, as well as the community, are welcome to attend.

Registration begins in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom on the BYU campus at 9 a.m., with breakfast beginning at 8:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies and orientation will take place from 9:25 to 10 a.m., and service projects will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lamar Mays, president of the Black Student Union at BYU, will speak at the orientation, along with Laura Predium, former BSU president, and Sarah Westerberg, director of the Center for Service and Learning.

Service activities include making hats for children in a Russian orphanage, coloring and laminating school supplies for underprivileged schools, creating educational books from magazines for children around the world, stenciling patterns and cutting fabric for humanitarian aid, and many others.

A Mountain Star blood drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the WSC East Lounge. Call the BYU Center for Service and Learning at (801) 422-8686 for more information.
