Students invited to participate in Education in Zion art workshop March 12

Education in Zion and the Department of Visual Arts will be hosting an artist-led workshop Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Education in Zion Gallery in the Joseph F. Smith Building.

The workshop will include a gallery discussion focusing on place, memory and identity with emphasis on the collage pieces in After Eve exhibition. Participants of all skill levels are welcome and will be able to create a collage of their own to take home. The program, including materials, is free of cost. Pre-registration is requested; call (801) 422-6519 or e-mail educationinzion@byu.edu.

The After Eve exhibition at Education in Zion’s new upstairs rotating gallery space showcases the talents of 12 BYU art students’ celebration of women and education through painting and sculpture. The temporary exhibition runs through early Spring 2011.

After Eve pays tribute to women who, like Eve, chose to pursue light and knowledge and open the door to learning for future generations. Highlighting this important decision, the exhibition honors the rich legacy humanity enjoys because of the courageous women of the past.

One of the exhibiting artists, Karen McKay, shares, "This show is an opportunity for me to share my enthusiasm for the great mission women have within the home, church, and world to obtain an education and use it to strengthen others.”

“These works of art are a fascinating look at women and learning. Several pieces explore women's spheres of influence and how these transcend generations. As we contemplate the women in our lives, both now and in the past, we can more fully recognize and deeply appreciate the tremendous influence they have had in shaping us and future generations,” explains Ann Lambson, Education in Zion curator.

The exhibition includes work from student artists Annie Henrie, Anna Ferrin, Alyssa Grant, Whitney Taylor, Brooklynn Johnson, Dantzel Cenatiempo, Rebecca Snyder, Karen McKay, Sallie Poet, Sam Stevens, Sarah Waldron and Stephanie Miller.

The Education in Zion Gallery opened in Fall 2008 and is under the direction of the Harold B. Lee Library. The permanent exhibition explores a tradition of learning that aims to educate the whole soul and documents the rich history and heritage of education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the revelations of the prophet Joseph Smith to the current worldwide Church Educational System. Individuals recognized on the walls and displays of the gallery are examples of those who sought light and truth; collectively, their stories form a greater one of the importance of lifelong, eternal learning.
