Student soloists shine in BYU Evening of Concertos March 2

Student soloists from the School of Music and the Brigham Young University Philharmonic Orchestra will be featured in the annual “Evening of Concertos” Wednesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are available at byuarts.com/tickets or (801) 422-4322 for $6 to $10.

Soloists for the evening are winners of the School of Music’s Concertos Competition, effectively making them the best soloists on campus, said Kory Katseanes, director of the School of Music and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra.

“This concert is one of the most popular concerts in the school every year — for all the right reasons,” Katseanes said. “It’s a spectacular showcase of the rising talent coming out of the School of Music.”

Competition winners select from a repertoire of classical pieces and work with faculty members to perfect their solo performance, accompanied by the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra.

This year’s program includes the Trumpet Concerto in A flat major by Alexander Arutnian, performed by Joshua Coffey, trumpet; the Viola Concerto by Gosta Nystroem, performed by Gina Conelly, viola; the “Jewel Song” from “Faust” by Charles Gounod, performed by Liberty Pierce, soprano; the Clarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland, performed by Abigail Tippetts, clarinet; “Tzigane” by Maurice Ravel, performed by Allison Smith, violin; the Oboe Concerto in D major by Richard Strauss, performed by Jessie Fullmer, oboe; and the Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, by Edvard Grieg, performed by Yurika Ohki Taura, piano.

The BYU Philharmonic Orchestra plays compositions from all musical periods, focusing on the Romantic period but also including 20th- and 21st-century compositions. Bringing these great symphonic works to life are 95 of the university's finest musicians. The orchestra performs 10 to 14 concerts each year — plus tours throughout the western United States — and collaborates with BYU’s acclaimed opera, choral and ballet programs.
