Student Innovator of the Year contest at BYU Oct. 19-20

The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University will host its second annual Student Innovator of the Year competition Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 19 and 20.

More than 50 teams of student inventors from all areas of campus will compete for $10,000 in prize money. Entries will be judged on engineering innovation, product originality and usefulness, as well as the level of clarity and professionalism of each team's presentation.

Events will kick off Wednesday at noon in Brigham Square and will continue until 3 p.m. All project prototypes will be on display and the student teams will be available to answer questions. The judges will select the top 10 projects to advance to the final round.

The final presentations and judging will be Thursday in the Varsity Theater from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Each of the top-10 student teams will briefly present their projects and answer questions from the judges. Audience members will have the chance to win prizes, including an iPod giveaway. All SIOY events are open to the public.

The final winners of the competition will be encouraged to enter their innovations in the 2012 Business Plan or Social Venture competitions hosted by the BYU Marriott School of Management.

The SIOY competition has been driven by the efforts of Engineering and Technology Startup, a student-run organization empowering innovation, and is sponsored jointly by the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology and the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.
