Student Innovator of the Year Competition at BYU Nov. 7-8

Student inventors will compete for $12,000 in prize money

The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University will host its Third Annual Student Innovator of the Year Competition Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 7 and 8.

More than 30 teams of student inventors from all areas of campus will compete for $12,000 in prize money. Entries will be judged on engineering innovation, product originality and usefulness, as well as the level of clarity and professionalism of each team's presentation. All SIOY events are open to the public.

Events will kick off Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Brigham Square and will continue until 2 p.m. All project prototypes will be on display, and the student teams will be available to answer questions. The judges will select the top 10 projects to advance to the final round.

The final presentations and judging will be Thursday in the Varsity Theater of the Wilkinson Student Center from 2 to 3 p.m. Each of the top-seven student teams will briefly present their projects and answer questions from the judges. Audience members will have the chance to win prizes, including an iPod giveaway.

The final winners of the competition will be encouraged to enter their innovations in the 2013 Miller New Venture Challenge or the Social Venture competitions in the BYU Marriott School of Business.

The SIOY competition has been driven by the efforts of Venture Factory, a student-run organization empowering innovation, and is sponsored jointly by the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology and the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at the Marriott School.
