Steve Humphries receives first Distinguished Teaching Award from Department of Mathematics

Steve Humphries, professor of mathematics, will receive the first annual Distinguished Teaching Award from the Brigham Young University Department of Mathematics on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. in 3714 Harold B. Lee Library.

Following the presentation of the award, Humphries will present a lecture titled "Piles of Pennies and Mountains of Money,” followed by a reception hosted by the Mathematics Department.

The Distinguished Teaching Award was established by a recent gift from Carolyn Savage Wright and the Savage Foundation as a tribute to teachers in the BYU Department of Mathematics, with special recognition given to Wayne Barrett, Peter Bates, James Cannon, Peter Crawley, Lawrence Fearnley, Kenneth Hillam, Kenneth Larson, Hal Moore and Don Robinson.

As the recipient of this award, Humphries is recognized for effective teaching and mentoring with a $1,000 stipend, and for the year, a bronze sculpture, “Wildfire,” by Helaman Ferguson, a former member of the BYU Mathematics Department.
