Status of women in Kyrgyzstan topic of BYU lecture Oct. 12

The wife of a former ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to the United States will speak at a Brigham Young University Women's Studies Colloquium on Thursday, Oct. 12, at noon.

Cholpon Akmatalieva will diiscuss "Status and Role of Women in Kyrgyzstan: Past and Present" in 2110 Joseph F. Smith Building.

Akmatalieva, wife of Baktybek Abdrisaev, is a native of Kyrgyzstan who received her master's degree in philosophy at Kazakh State University and her doctorate in social philosophy at Moscow State University. She has written extensively on the women's movement. Her husband is currently a professor in the Department of History and Political Science at Utah Valley State College.

She has taught political science classes at several universities in the Kyrgyzstan and language classes at Diplomatic Language Services in the United States. She is fluent in Kyrgyz, Russian and English.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system
