The Brigham Young University campus will once again be the location for the 2009 Utah Special Olympics Summer Games Thursday through Saturday, May 28-30.
The annual Special Olympics will feature hundreds of athletes competing in track and field, soccer, cycling, softball and T-ball. The events will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The events will kick off with Opening Ceremonies Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at the Larry H. Miller and Gail Miller Baseball Complex, or at the Smith Fieldhouse in the event of inclement conditions. Emceed by the Harmon brothers from Harmons Grocery Stores, the Opening Ceremonies will feature Mayor Lewis Billings and BYU athletes.
Community members are invited to attend the events and support the athletes or volunteer with the activities. Volunteer tasks include timing, scorekeeping, escorting, judging and presenting awards. For more information on attending or volunteering at events, visit sout.org.
“We could go about our lives and ignore those around us who are not blessed with the same skills and talents that we enjoy,” said Theodore Okawa, a community service coordinator in the BYU Center for Service and Learning. “Or, we could exercise the Savior’s love as we show our love through our support for those who don’t enjoy the same blessings that we have. As community members attend and volunteer at Special Olympics they choose to show their love.”
