Special announcement to accompany premiere of latest BYU animated film Kites

Media screening March 18

What: The award-winning BYU Center for Animation will unveil its latest short film in a special screening for the news media.

In a radical departure from their award-winning tradition of comedies, the BYU students chose a poignant feel for the new short. Kites tells the bittersweet story of a boy and his grandfather dealing with a major change in their lives.

At the special premiere of the film for the media, the Center will also make a major announcement.

When: Wednesday, March 18, 11:30 a.m. - noon

Who: Student animators who worked on the film will be available for interviews, as will the professors who guide the program. Contact information will be available for recent graduates of the program who worked on Up! Pixar's newest film coming out in May.

Where: BYU's Interactive Reality Auditorium, Room 75 in the Crabtree Building, which is building 25 on this map: http://map.byu.edu/

Background:

  • The BYU program has garnered seven College Television Awards, commonly known as "Student Emmys," from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
  • Last year Ed Catmull, president of Pixar, said of the BYU program:

"Over the years, Pixar has worked with a lot of different universities around the country and hired people. In the last few years, we found that BYU has risen to the top. BYU has an extraordinary program here."

"It's amazing to suddenly see that BYU is producing the best in the industry. It's the perception not just at Pixar but also at the other studios that something pretty remarkable is happening here."
