Science comes to life at Chemistry Open Lab Day

Hand-on learning for students in grades 7-12

BYU’s College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is hosting the second annual Chemistry Open Lab Day on Saturday, May 10 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in room W140 of the Benson Building, for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in learning more about science and chemistry.

Open Lab Day is designed to introduce chemistry and the study of chemistry through fun, interactive experiements. Attendees can expect to see chemistry come alive while watching a wide variety of reactions between different elements. The event will conclude with a chemistry magic show. 

The event is hosted by Y-Chem, BYU's student chapter of the American Chemical Society, and gives students a hands-on approach to chemistry and an opportunity to meet current chemistry majors.

Junior high school students will participate in three experiments, and high school students will participate in two experiments and take tours of various chemistry research labs.

Attendees should wear long pants and closed-toed shoes for safety purposes. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

BYU’s world-class pipe organ is the ‘crown jewel’ of the new Concert Hall

If you haven’t experienced the pipe organ in the BYU Music Building yet, you’re in for a treat. With 4,613 pipes and 81 ranks (sets of pipes), it’s the third largest organ in Utah and the only one with two consoles. Organists can play from a console located in the center of the pipework facade or from a movable stage console.
