Ruth Monson to give free string recital July 31 at BYU

Guest artist Ruth Monson will be performing at Brigham Young University Saturday, July 31, at 3 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The event is free.

Monson, who will be performing on the violin and viola during the concert, will be accompanied on the piano by Jayne Galloway.

She will begin the concert with “Elegy for Viola” by BYU music professor Laurence Lowe. The piece is a movement from Lowe’s Sonata for Horn, which he rewrote for viola. She is dedicating the performance to the memory of her father, Samuel Christian Monson.

Monson will then perform Johannes Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 for viola in E flat major, Op. 120. After a brief intermission, she will present Sergai Prokofiev’s Sonata for violin in D major, Op. 94a.
