Rory Scanlon named associate dean, director of Honors Program at BYU

Academic Vice President John S. Tanner has announced the appointment of Rory Scanlon as an associate dean of Undergraduate Education at Brigham Young University, replacing Gary Hatch, who has served as associate dean for seven years.

Scanlon’s appointment will officially begin March 1.

A professor of theatre and media arts, Scanlon has served for five years as associate dean in the College of Fine Arts and Communications.

In his new post, Scanlon will assume specific responsibilities as director of the Honors Program and as a member of the Undergraduate Education Leadership Council, which oversees programs such as General Education and Freshman Mentoring.

Scanlon received a MFA in costume design at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1984 and has been a member of the BYU faculty for 26 years. He has been the director for the Division of Design and Production for the past six years in the College of Fine Arts and Communications.

He is a past president of the Rocky Mountain Theatre Association, was the Utah representative to RMTA for four years, sat on the Provo City Arts Council for three years and is a regularly invited presenter for the Utah Theatre Association.

His design work in costumes, sets and lights includes work with Disney, Hasbro and university/professional productions throughout the United States. He was the costume designer for the Hill Cumorah Pageant for five summers and has worked with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on several historical costume recreation projects in Salt Lake City, Mesa and Far West.

His first book with Costume Fashion Press in New York, “Costume Design Graphics,” was released in 2001, and he is completing work on a second book based on his research in Old Testament and Book of Mormon clothing.
