Retired diplomat to discuss Iran at BYU lecture Jan. 13

Retired diplomat John “Phil” Colton will be speaking Wednesday, Jan. 13, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building at Brigham Young University. His subject will be “Nuclear Non-Proliferation: The Case of Iran.”

Colton is a native Utahn, and he attended the University of Utah, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He did graduate work at the University of Idaho, the University of Missouri and MIT.

He has worked for years in the private nuclear fuel industry in Idaho, Missouri and Connecticut and has also worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. He has served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 37 years. He served in active duty during Desert Storm in 1991.

Colton has also been a U.N. and U.S. State Department employee where he has had the opportunity to travel to more than 120 countries. Through those visits he has met thousands of engineers, scientists and diplomats. While working for the government, he has been a senior officer at the U.S. State Department, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.S. Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
