Resonance in story-telling topic for Lee Library lecture Feb. 26

Jeffrey Parkin, a Brigham Young University associate professor of Theatre and Media Arts, will present a House of Learning Lecture, “Story and Authentic Messengers: Meditations on Film, Originality and Poisonous Art,” Thursday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium.

Parkin’s lecture will examine resonance in modern storytelling.

“The Holy Grail of storytellers may well be resonance — emotional reverberations of truth that transform both individual and culture,” Parkin said. “Some call this resonance originality, yet tradition holds that there is nothing new under the sun. So why — if orginality is no longer within our reach — are we still telling stories? Is it even possible to tell stories that resonate anymore?”

Parkin specializes in media arts studies, directing, writing, producing and new media. Before coming to BYU, he worked in Los Angeles for 15 years as a producer, director and writer. He has written, directed and produced films, commercials, documentaries, music videos and industrial films, including a number-one-rated movie of the week for CBS Television.
