Reid Nibley Scholarship Concert to feature pianist Barbara Nissman Feb. 27

The annual Reid Nibley Scholarship Concert at Brigham Young University will feature internationally acclaimed pianist Barbara Nissman Friday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.byuarts.com, by phone at (801) 422-4322 or in person at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office. She will also be featured in a free master class Friday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Her program will include the Prelude and Fugue in A minor for organ by Bach transcribed by Franz Liszt; Nocturne, Op. 33 (Homage to John Fields), by Samuel Barber; the Sonata No. 6, Op. 82, by Serge Prokofiev; Three Preludes by Sergei Rachmaninoff; and the Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt.

Known for her definitive recordings of the complete piano music of Alberto Ginastera and the complete piano sonatas of Sergei Prokofiev, Barbara Nissman’s roots remain within the 19th century. Hailed by a New York critic as "one of the last pianists in the grand Romantic tradition of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Rubinstein" her connection to romantic pianism reaffirms her approach to the 20th-century pianism of Prokofiev and Ginastera.

Her international career was personally launched by Eugene Ormandy who had previously engaged her as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and she has since performed with many of the world’s finest orchestras.

The concert and scholarship honor former BYU piano faculty member Reid Nibley, who enjoyed an international performing career during the latter half of the 20th century. Proceeds from the concert will go toward funding the Reid Nibley Piano Scholarship at BYU.
