Quintet of the Americas plans Feb. 10 BYU recital

Artists-in-residence at the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University

The artists-in-residence at the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University, the Quintet of the Americas, will perform Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall at Brigham Young University.

The quintet includes Edward R. Gilmore on the clarinet, Sato Moughalian on flute, Barbara Oldham on horn, Matt Sullivan on oboe and Laura Koepke on bassoon. Tickets are $12 or $8 with a BYU or student ID. For tickets, contact the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

The program includes numbers such as the Concerto No. 2 after Vivaldi (originally for organ) arranged for wind quintet by Mordechai Rechtman, the Mozart Fantasy, Op. 91 (2006) by James Cohn commissioned by Quintet of the Americas and “Suite of Brazilian Songs” by Ernesto Nazareth.

The group’s mission is to broaden the knowledge and appreciation of woodwind chamber music from the Western Hemisphere by performing contemporary, classical and folk-derived music from the diverse cultural traditions of the Americas, and to perform, commission and record woodwind quintets and related chamber music.

In the 27 years since the quintet’s founding, the group has toured more than 300 cities in the United States, Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, the Caribbean, the Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia. They have given recitals at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festivals and many other prominent venues.
