Q'd Up, BYU faculty jazz ensemble, plans free concert Jan. 30

Q'd Up, the Brigham Young University School of Music faculty jazz quintet, will perform Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Madsen Recital Hall. The concert is free.

With more than 25 different instruments under their command, Q’d Up members include Ray Smith on woodwinds, Ron Brough and Jay Lawrence on percussion, Steve Lindeman on keyboards and Eric Hansen on bass.

The concert will include new compositions by the performers as well as jazz standards, including “Avalon,” “Black Action Figure,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and “Tears Inside.”

Origami-inspired space tech: BYU mechanical engineers create deployable systems for NASA and U.S. Air Force

BYU’s Compliant Mechanisms Research lab, inspired by the ancient art of origami, is building a foldable, compact design that could help launch satellite systems to space in a rocket. After five years of research, a team led by professors Larry Howell and Spencer Magleby has succeeded in creating foldable antenna systems than can deploy off space rockets and permanently open to enhance satellite systems.
