Public school students to put self-made robots to the test Wednesday

Robots must retrieve the "black box" from a sunken airplane

  • Third Annual Utah Underwater Robotics Competition
  • Location: 123 N. Center Street, Lehi
  • Time: Wednesday, March 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What: 3rd Annual Utah Underwater Robotics Competition

Who: More than 400 elementary and middle school students from the Wasatch Front will put their science and engineering skills to the test as they navigate robots they designed and built themselves through an underwater challenge.

The children were mentored by faculty and students from BYU's Technology and Engineering Education program, led by assistant professor Geoff Wright.

When: Wednesday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Lehi Legacy Center, 123 N. Center Street in Lehi.

Why: To promote youth interest in STEM subjects. The competition is sponsored by US Synthetic and GoEngineer.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
