President of University of Jordan to speak at BYU Nov. 4

Abdullah M. F. Al-Musa, president of the University of Jordan, will speak on "Impact of Globalization on Higher Education" on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. in 3222 Wilkinson Student Center on the Brigham Young University campus.

This event is hosted by BYU's Middle East Studies and the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

Al-Musa has been president of the university since February 2002, where he began as a lecturer in 1975. He has held many positions in the intervening years, including academic vice president over scientific and medical faculties (1999–2002) and dean of agriculture faculty (1997–99).

In addition, he has chaired and been a member of numerous committees and organizations throughout his career. This includes membership in the Royal Society for the Conservation Nature and being chairman of the Society of Friends of Scientific Research of Universities of Jordan.

His latest book is "Arid and Semi-Arid Land Stewardship: A Ten- Year Review of Accomplishments and Contributions of the International Arid Lands Consortium."

Al-Musa received a B.S. in pesticides from Alexandria University in Egypt (1967–71), a master's degree in horticulture from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon (1973–75), and a Ph.D. in plant pathology (virology) from Washington State University (1976–79). He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of California—Riverside (1985–86).
