President Samuelson, Sharon Samuelson featured at Jan. 13 devotional

Brigham Young University President Cecil O. Samuelson and his wife, Sharon, will speak at a campus devotional Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

The devotional will be broadcast live on KBYU (Channel 11), KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU-Television and BYU-Radio satellite networks and on byubroadcasting.org.

It will be rebroadcast Sunday, Jan. 18, on KBYU (Channel 11) at 6 a.m. and 11 a.m., on BYU-Television at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., on KBYU-FM (89.1) at 8 p.m. and on BYU-Radio at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.

President Samuelson was installed as BYU's 12th president on Sept. 9, 2003. He began work as president on May 1, 2003.

Prior to becoming president of BYU, he served as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On Oct. 1, 1994, he was called as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church.

Prior to his call, he served as senior vice president of Intermountain Health Care and president of IHC Hospitals. He earned his bachelor's, master's and medical degrees from the University of Utah.

Sharon Giauque Samuelson graduated from the University of Utah with honors in history. She also obtained her teaching certification and taught school during the early years of their marriage. Active in the community, she has held leadership positions in all of the auxiliary organizations of the Church while working as a full-time homemaker and mother to the Samuelson's five children.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
