President Dieter F. Uchtdorf to be honored at BYU ROTC Presidential Review Nov. 9

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will be honored as this year’s recipient of the Leadership Excellence Award during the annual Brigham Young University ROTC Presidential Review and Veterans Day Commemoration Friday, Nov. 9, and will address the audience as part of the ceremonies.

The Presidential Review is conducted annually on the Friday closest to Veteran’s Day to show respect for soldiers past and present who have dedicated their lives to preserving the freedoms of the United States.

The review will be conducted in Brigham Square (between the Wilkinson Student Center and Harold B. Lee Library) and is open to the public. President Cecil O. Samuelson will preside over the ceremony.

Beginning at 9 a.m., cadets will assemble near the Daniel H. Wells ROTC Building east of the Wilkinson Student Center.  At 9:15 a.m., they will conduct a flag ceremony and “Taps” will be played, followed by the cadets marching in formation through the BYU campus to assemble in Brigham Square. The Presidential Review will then begin at 9:30 a.m.

Prior to the Presidential Review, President Uchtdorf, President Samuelson and leaders from the BYU Army and Air Force ROTC programs will conduct a private wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the BYU students who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country.

For the past 24 years, the combined BYU Army and Air Force ROTC programs have presented either the Leadership Excellence Award or the Patriot’s Award to distinguished honorees who represent the values of duty, honor, country, God and family during the Presidential Review.

President Uchtdorf was nominated by the BYU Army ROTC Advisory Council for the honor. Previous honorees include leaders in religion, politics, education and the military.
