Political science professor Valerie M. Hudson to give final BYU lecture Nov. 30

Brigham Young University political science professor Valerie M. Hudson will deliver her final lecture as a BYU professor Wednesday, Nov. 30 at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, Hudson will take up the George H.W. Bush Chair in the Bush School of Government at Texas A&M University in College Station, Tex.

Hudson received a bachelor's degree in political science from BYU and a master's degree and doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University. She has previously taught at Northwestern and Rutgers Universities.

She was included as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2009. Hudson’s groundbreaking book with co-author Andrea M. den Boer, "Bare Branches: The Security Implications of Asia’s Surplus Male Population," explored the impact unequal sex ratios have on national security.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, she served as the director of graduate studies for the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies for eight years. She is the winner of many teaching awards and the recipient of a National Science Foundation research grant.

Her articles have appeared in such journals as International Security, Journal of Peace Research, Political Psychology and Foreign Policy Analysis.

This lecture will be archived at kennedy.byu.edu/archive. For more information, contact Lee Simons at (801) 422-2652 or lee_simons@byu.edu.
