Pianist Stephen Beus plans guest recital at BYU Oct. 17

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will host guest artist Stephen Beus in a piano recital Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

In his recital, Beus will perform the Prelude and Fugue in A Minor by J.S. Bach and Franz Liszt; the Sonata in E Major, Op. 6 by Felix Mendelssohn; “Forgotten Melody ,” Op. 39 No. 5 by Nikolai Medtner; “La Campanella” by Liszt; and the Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 106, “Hammerklavier” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Preceding the recital, Beus, along with Paul Pollei, a retired BYU piano faculty member and director of the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition, will participate in a panel discussion Thursday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Beus won first prize in the 2006 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and first place in the Vendome Prize International Competition in Lisbon. He also received the Max I. Allen Fellowship from the American Pianists Association.

In 2008, Beus made his Carnegie Hall debut performing the Prokofiev Concerto No. 3 with the Juilliard Orchestra. He has also performed as guest soloist with the Gulbenkian Symphony in Portugal, the Tivoli Symphony in Denmark, the Royal Philharmonic of Morocco and the Vaasa Symphony Orchestra in Finland.

Equally active as a soloist, Beus has performed in the Scuola san Rocco in Venice, Italy; the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Italy; the Queluz Palace in Lisbon, Portugal; and the Salle Gaveau and Salle Cortot in Paris. He has performed recitals across the United States, as well as in Kazakhstan, Russia, Finland, Switzerland, Germany and Morocco.

The fourth of eight children, Beus was born and raised in Othello, Wash., and started piano lessons at age five. Four years later he made his orchestral debut.

He received music degrees from Whitman College and The Juilliard School. In addition to excelling as a concert pianist, Beus spent two years serving as an LDS missionary in Helsinki, Finland.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
