Ovid's “Metamorphoses” becomes stage play at BYU Feb. 7-17

Audiences will see the classic 15-story set, “Metamorphoses” by Ovid, come to life in the Nelke Theatre at Brigham Young University. Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, and run through Saturday, Feb. 17.

Tickets are $10 or $6 weeknights and $7 weekends with a BYU or student ID. There will be no performances on Sundays or Mondays.

Based on David R. Slavitt's translation of “The Metamorphoses of Ovid” and written by Mary Zimmerman, this stunning version of “Metamorphoses” opened in March 2002 at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre to critical acclaim.

“Funny one moment, achingly sorrowful the next, ‘Metamorphoses’ somehow manages both to lift you out of the moment you’re living in and speak to it with piercing directness,” wrote Amy Gamerman in a Wall Street Journal article regarding Zimmerman’s work.

The play explores themes of love, the inevitability of change and the human ability to adapt to change, according to director and BYU faculty member Megan Sanborn Jones. It is recommended for audiences ages 8 and above.

The cast consists of eight actors: Courtney Montrose, Erika Riggs, Valerie Payne, Sarah Jenson, Carter Thompson, Joel Morgan Ray Bree, Eric “C” Heaps and Arisael Rivera. The script requires each actor to play multiple roles.

The production manager is Russell D. Richins, with costume, makeup and hair design by Pamela Leavitt and Jeffrey Sorensen. The dramaturg is Breanna King, and the scenic designer is Melissa Webb. Rodger Sorensen is the artistic director and department chair.
