Noted reading specialist to lecture at BYU March 25

Joseph Torgesen, an expert on the prevention and remediation of reading difficulties in young children, will speak Thursday, March 25, at 4 p.m. in the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center on the Brigham Young University campus.

Torgesen's speech is titled "Improving Reading Skills: Strategies for Teachers." He is the director of the Florida Center for Reading Research and is the Robert M. Gagne Professor of Psychology and Education at Florida State University.

The lecture, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the David O. McKay School of Education at BYU.

Parking is available in the lot directly east of the Wilkinson Student Center.

Torgesen has also conducted research on assessment of phonological awareness and reading. He has conducted research with children who have learning problems for 25 years and is the author of more than 160 articles, book chapters, books and tests related to reading and learning disabilities.

He was recently appointed by President George W. Bush to the Board of Directors of the National Board for Education Sciences.
