Philadelphia Eagles head coach and Brigham Young University alumnus Andy Reid has enlisted the aid of two BYU statistics professors in his quest for National Football League domination.
Gil Fellingham and Shane Reese are in the middle of statistically examining Eagles' data from the 2003 season to identify players' most important skills and other telling trends. The duo has done the same for the BYU men's volleyball team and the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team.
Fellingham and Reese were recommended to Reid by former BYU men's volleyball coach Carl McGown, who coached two BYU teams to national championships and was an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic team during the 2004 Games in Athens.
Over the years, McGown has used the BYU statisticians' services to great effect, focusing his coaching efforts and honing players' skills.
The numbers being crunched for Reid's Eagles represent every play, every coach's decision and every player on the field and may give the already-successful coach further insight into how to improve his team. Fellingham and Reese will present their findings to Reid after the NFL season.
