Newbery Award-winner to speak at BYU Sept. 30

Gary Schmidt, author and two-time winner of the Newbery Honor Award from the American Library Association, will deliver the annual Nan Osmond Grass Lecture Thursday, Sept. 30,  at 11 a.m. in B-192 Joseph F. Smith Building at Brigham Young University.

Schmidt is most well-known for “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,” a historical novel that won the Printz Honor, and “Wednesday Wars.” Schmidt is the author of more than 15 books and teaches at Calvin College in Michigan.

He began his education at Gordon College and later attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He specializes in children’s and adolescent literature, New England cultural history and creative writing.

Each year, BYU invites a standout professional to speak at the Nan Osmond Grass Lecture. The lecturers are non-BYU faculty who help educate students, faculty and the public on how literature can enrich the understanding and appreciation of life.

The lecture honors Grass, a professor at BYU who passed away in 1999. She and her family members — her father, mother and sister — have taught countless students for 71 years at BYU. The Nan Osmond Grass Lecture and Professorship celebrate their legacy and contributions.
