New Technologically Advanced Nursing Lab Opens Doors for Tours

The BYU College of Nursing is hosting an open house for a lab that underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation

Renovated Nursing Learning Center Open House

  • University employees, students and campus friends invited
  • Wednesday, September 3
  • 1:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m.

Ever wondered how nurses practice placing an IV? The BYU College of Nursing invites university employees, students and campus friends to participate in an event that offers a rare look at the remarkable technology that prepares BYU nursing students to save lives.

Come tour the newly expanded Mary Jane Rawlinson Geertsen Nursing Learning Center during an Open House on Wednesday, September 3, from 1:20 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. in 130 SWKT.

Visitors will be able to tour various innovative facilities used for practicing every conceivable nursing situation, from placing an IV or taking a person’s blood pressure, to simulating delivery room or clinical scenarios.

The recently completed expansion of the lab, housed in the 1st floor of the Spencer W. Kimball Tower, began in April of this year and was funded by a gift from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation. It includes 4,000 square feet of additional space that better accommodates improved full-simulation experience rooms and other technology essential to helping undergraduate and graduate nursing students acquire and review advanced nursing skills.

During the open house, visitors will see the Center’s high-fidelity manikins that respond to medicine and procedures applied by nurses. For example, the manikin’s blood pressure or heart rate will increase or decrease in response to different medicine given by the nurse. These manikins, housed in situation labs and coupled with audio/visual debriefing rooms, provide students with a chance to bridge the gap between textbook and real life experiences.

Prior to the open house, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:00 p.m. in 130 SWKT. Rex J. Rawlinson, President and Chairman of the Board of the Fritz B. Burns Foundation will be present for the ceremony.
