Brigham Young University’s Education in Zion Gallery will host a reception celebrating its new “After Eve” art exhibit honoring women Thursday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the gallery on the east end of the Joseph F. Smith Building.
The event is free, and refreshments will be served. Additionally, the curator, docents and student artists will attend to answer questions about the art.
The temporary exhibition, housed in the gallery’s new rotating exhibition space, will run through spring 2011.
“After Eve” showcases the talents of 12 BYU art students who honor women and education through painting and sculpture. The exhibit pays tribute to women who, like Eve, chose to pursue light and knowledge and open the door to learning for future generations, according to gallery curator Ann Lambson.
One of the exhibiting artists, Karen McKay, said, "This show is an opportunity for me to share my enthusiasm for the great mission women have within the home, church and world to obtain an education and use it to strengthen others.”
The exhibition will include work by Annie Henrie, Anna Ferrin, Alyssa Grant, Whitney Taylor, Brooklynn Johnson, Dantzel Cenatiempo, Rebecca Snyder, Karen McKay, Sallie Poet, Sam Stevens, Sarah Waldron and Stephanie Miller.
“These works of art are a fascinating look at women and learning,” said Lambson. “Several pieces explore women’s spheres of influence and how these transcend generations. As we contemplate the women in our lives, both now and in the past, we can more fully recognize and deeply appreciate the tremendous influence they have had in shaping us and future generations,” she said.
The Education in Zion Gallery opened in fall 2008 and is under the direction of the Harold B. Lee Library. The permanent exhibition explores a tradition of learning that aims to educate the whole soul and documents the rich history and heritage of education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from the revelations of the Prophet Joseph Smith to the current worldwide Church Educational System. Individuals recognized on the walls and displays of the gallery are examples of those who sought light and truth; collectively, their stories form a greater one of the importance of lifelong, eternal learning.
