New business book shows cheaters lose, the honest win

CEO of Dell, Massachusetts' Governor Among Authors

At a time when public confidence in business is at a low ebb, Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management has released a new book that shows integrity and success are not contradictory in the business world but complementary.

Featuring compelling speeches at BYU by top CEOs and educators, the book "Business with Integrity" inspires readers to keep the bottom line in proper perspective and to conduct business with honesty and character. It answers tough questions like: What does a company do when it stumbles upon the marketing plan of one of its toughest competitors? Why does a woman start embezzling funds from her firm after 34 honest years? How does a young father react when he realizes he forgot to report his taxable income from a private consulting project?

Each chapter contains real-life experiences highlighting the vital role of integrity as shared by prominent business leaders like Kevin B. Rollins of Dell, John E. Pepper formerly of Procter & Gamble, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Sheri Dew of Deseret Book Co., Mark H. Willes, formerly of Times Mirror Co., Jon M. Huntsman Sr. of Huntsman Chemical Corp. and William H. Child of R.C. Willey Home Furnishings, among others. Distinguished educators also share thoughts on how to ethically conduct business in the modern age.

"In a world where the media focuses our attention on daily breaches of honesty, this book offers positive examples from the lives of everyday people and business leaders who placed integrity above quick gains," says Richard Marriott, chairman of Host Marriott Corp.

With a foreword by organizational strategy expert and international best-selling author Stephen R. Covey, the book has its genesis in the dramatic fallout from the accounting scandals that ushered in this century.

"This book is a welcome source of inspiration for restoring trust," says Nolan D. Archibald, chairman and CEO of the Black & Decker Corporation. "The engaging stories and wise counsel found here remind us that gaining and keeping trust is fundamental to leadership."

The hardcover book is edited by J. Melody Murdock and Joseph D. Ogden, published by BYU Press and available through Deseret Book and the BYU Bookstore.
