New book from BYU Studies chronicles history of the Church in Japan

For Japanese members and returned missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served in Japan, “Taking the Gospel to the Japanese 1901-2001,” just released by BYU Studies, will be a step back into familiar history as it chronicles the first 100 years of the Church’s presence in Japan.

The articles in the book cover such topics as the challenges to successful missionary work among the Japanese and how the Japanese press has represented Mormonism. In addition, it answers questions about why the Book of Mormon needed to be translated into Japanese three times in one century and whether Latter-day Saint converts hail from specific areas based on the region’s religious traditions.

Edited by Reid L. Neilson and Brigham Young University professor Van C. Gessel, “Taking the Gospel to the Japanese 1901-2001” is the first publication written in English to chronicle the history of the Church in Japan.
