New appointments in Undergraduate Education at BYU

Brent W. Webb, academic vice president at Brigham Young University, has announced two new appointments in Undergraduate Education.

Deborah Dean, a professor of English, has been named an associate dean for Undergraduate Education, while Joseph Parry of the humanities, classics and comparative literature faculty is the new director of the Honors Program. Both appointments will become effective May 1.

They will replace Rory Scalon, who has been serving in both positions and who will be returning to the faculty of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts.

“Rory has done an outstanding job in his position," said John D. Bell, dean of Undergraduate Education. "He has brought enthusiasm to the Honors Program and has helped develop a vision that will bless students now and well into the future. He will be deeply missed.”

Dean is an associate chair in the English Department with specializations in English education and composition pedagogy. Prior to coming to BYU in 1999, she taught junior high and high school in Washington State.

She received her master's degree in education from City University, Bellevue, and her doctorate from Seattle Pacific University. Her professional interests focus on helping teachers improve instruction, particularly instruction in language and writing.

Parry received bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU before earning a doctorate from the University of Utah in 1995. He specializes in medieval and renaissance studies with an emphasis in the relationship of visual art and phenomenology.

Undergraduate Education fosters essential university-wide elements of the baccalaureate: First-Year Experience, Freshman Mentoring, General Education and the Honors Program. These interrelated programs together promote and champion teaching and learning within an integrated university education and enrich the educational experience and benefit the life of each undergraduate student.
