Music by composer James Tenney featured at BYU recital

The Brigham Young University School of Music and Group for New Music will present a concert featuring music by composer James Tenney Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The performers will be from the BYU instrumental ensembles, and will feature three pieces by Tenney, a leading composer in the American experimentalist tradition. Tenney, a theorist and performer as well as composer, has made significant contributions to the field of electronic and computer music.

Group for New Music director Steve Ricks says the program will be interesting and varied.

"The music of experimentalist James Tenney will stretch the ears of the audience in pleasing ways," Ricks said.

Also featured on the program will be BYU composer Murray Boren's "Liturgical Dances" for wind octet. The ensemble includes faculty performers Christian Smith on bassoon and Lara Saville on oboe, and will be conducted by graduate conducting student Joseph Hoffman.
