Museum of Peoples, Cultures to host September events

Brigham Young University’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 N. 100 East in Provo, will host several activities and entertainment events for students, families and children during September.

• On Friday, Sept. 18, the museum will host “Survivor,” a date night activity designed to test couples’ ability to withstand challenges and their ability to survive in the ancient world. The date night will begin with couples dividing into tribes, and then taking a tour of the museum’s current exhibits. These tours will help the tribes prepare for the night’s challenges, which include a timed excavation in a sand pit, a relay race to rebuild a broken pot and a trivia question round. There are two available sessions at 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets for “Survivor” are $10 a couple and can be purchased starting Sept. 14 at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk.

• On Saturday, Sept. 26, the museum will participate in the statewide “Celebrate Your Museum Day.” From 1 to 3 p.m. visitors may enjoy free tours, price drawings, crafts, refreshments and storytelling. Complimentary tours will be available after 1:30 p.m. Those who participate in the tours will be entered into a prize drawing that will be announced at the end of the tour. The museum will also be featuring culture case displays and its newest addition, a “Learning Lounge,” where visitors may explore topics related to exhibitions and collections at the museum. The event is sponsored by the Utah Office of Museum Services, the Utah Museums Association and the International Society of Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

• Every Friday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. the Museum of Peoples and Cultures is hosting story time for toddlers and preschoolers. “Stories From Around the World” is designed to promote learning and diversity awareness at a young age. Each week, folktales will be used to explore common elements like music, prayer and art among the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica, Africa and South America. The program is free, and all are welcome.

The Museum of Peoples and Cultures’ current exhibits are “New Lives: Building Community at Fourmile Ruin” and “Kachinas of the Southwest: Dances, Dolls and Rain.” Regular museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Hours are extended until 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
