Museum of Peoples, Cultures celebrates Utah Archaeology Week with May 11 block party

The Brigham Young University Museum of Peoples and Cultures will celebrate Utah Archaeology Week May 4-11 with its annual block party Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

This year’s block party is themed “Utah’s Heritage: Rich and Alive,” and families and students are invited to the museum to enjoy educational activities, entertainment and tasty treats. This event is free and open to the public. The museum is located at 100 E. 700 N. in Provo.

“This is the museum’s largest single event of the year,” said Kari Nelson, curator of education. “It’s always a fun day to welcome the public and share our excitement for learning about the past.”

The street in front of the museum will be closed off to make room for the celebration. The public will have the chance to learn about local archaeology through performances, interactive games and activities, and demonstrations from experts. Students and professional archaeologists will be on hand to share artifacts and stories from recent excavations in Utah Valley.

The museum regularly hosts events to serve the academic mission of BYU and to care for anthropological, archaeological and ethnographic collections in the university’s custody. Educating visitors through entertaining events allows the museum to branch out in creative ways to benefit the BYU and local communities.
