Museum of Art adds podcasts to its list of services

The Museum of Art at Brigham Young University is taking advantage of new technologies to help its visitors engage with the artworks in various exhibitions, as well as to keep visitors updated on museum events and public programs.

On April 4, the Museum of Art launched its first podcast—an audio tour of the current exhibition “Nostalgia and Technology: Embracing the New Through Art and Design.” The word “podcast” is a hybrid of the terms “iPod” and “broadcast.” Podcasting is a relatively new method for distributing audio files over the Internet.

The museum will produce a variety of free podcasts, from formal audio tours and lectures to informal gallery strolls with curators and artists. These podcasts will be available as free MP3 files that can be downloaded from the museum’s Web site. These files can be played on any commercially available MP3 player.

To get the museum’s podcasts:

  • “Subscribe” to the museum’s podcast feed and receive new “episodes” automatically.

  • Bring an MP3 player to the museum and download a podcast at the front desk. More information about the museum’s podcast feed is available on the museum’s Web site, www.byu.edu/moa.

The museum is also producing a monthly e-mail newsletter that highlights upcoming exhibitions, new acquisitions, museum events, lectures, symposia, bookstore discounts and sales and more. To sign up for the electronic newsletter, fill out the basic information form on the museum’s Web site to instantly be included in the loop of significant museum happenings.

Subscribers can remove their names and e-mail addresses from the mailing by clicking the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the newsletter.
