Mormon Tabernacle Choir director at BYU forum Feb. 24

Craig Jessop, music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, will discuss “For They Shall Be Comforted: Ein Deutches Requiem by Johannes Brahms” during a campus forum Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center on the Brigham Young University campus.

The forum will be broadcast live on KBYU (Channel 11), KBYU-FM (89.1), on the BYU-Television and BYU-Radio satellite networks and on byubroadcasting.org.

It will be rebroadcast Sunday, Feb. 29, on KBYU (Channel 11) at 6 a.m. and 11 a.m., on BYU-Television at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., on KBYU-FM (89.1) at 8 p.m. and on BYU-Radio at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A BYU alumnus, Jessop was appointed music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir organization, including the Temple Square Chorale and the Orchestra at Temple Square, in 1999. He had previously served as associate director since 1995.

Prior to his appointment with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Jessop served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force music programs. His assignments included serving as commander and conductor of the Band of the USAF in Ramstein, Germany, from 1987 to 1991 and commander and conductor of the Air Combat Command Heartland of America Band in Omaha, Neb., from 1991 to 1995.

Jessop has also been an active baritone vocalist, performing in the choirs of Robert Shaw, Helmuth Rilling and John Rutter.

He is a winner of the Utah State Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera Auditions and has participated in the Merola Opera Training Program of the San Francisco Opera.

BYU origami-inspired chair design featured on Mark Rober’s Top 10 list

A futuristic BYU-designed, origami-inspired Flex Chair, cut out of a single piece of flat material and folded into shape, has made YouTuber Mark Rober’s Top 10 list. In a Nov. 2 video post, Rober spotlights the chair at #7 on his list of Crunch Lab builds in the past year, and credits BYU compliant mechanisms researchers for the innovative design.
