"Monte Belknap, with Friends" at BYU's Madsen Recital Hall Jan. 9

"Monte Belknap, with Friends," a unique evening featuring Brigham Young University School of Music violin professor Monte Belknap and guest artists, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Belknap will begin the concert in the Recital Hall with "Classical in the Madsen" with faculty pianist Jeffrey Shumway. They will perform the Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 by Johannes Brahms as well as works by Paul Nero, George Enescu, Grigoras Dinicu and Jascha Heifetz.

The recital will then move to the Main Gallery on the third floor of the Harris Fine Arts Center for "Baroque in the Gallery" featuring the Sonata No. 1, Op. 5 by Arcangelo Corelli with cellist Garrick Woods. The audience will be able to watch and listen from the third or fourth floor galleries.

The program will return to the Recital Hall for "Jazz in Madsen" featuring jazz pianist Steve Lindeman, who will join Belknap for works by Charlie Parker, Nina Simone, Kurt Weill, Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
