Managing director of BYU Broadcasting Derek Marquis to give April 5 devotional

Derek Marquis, managing director of BYU Broadcasting, will speak at the Brigham Young University weekly devotional Tuesday, April 5, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Rebroadcast and archive information will be available at byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu.

Marquis worked for KSL Radio in Salt Lake City as a reporter and news anchor and then went on to serve as the news director of KUER, the National Public Radio affiliate at the University of Utah. Over the years he has been a freelance reporter for CBS, National Public Radio, the Associated Press and United Press International.

In 1991 he returned to BYU as the manager of corporate support for KBYU-TV and KBYU-FM. In 2007 he was appointed managing director of BYU Broadcasting, the umbrella orga­nization that operates the university’s television and radio channels, includ­ing KBYU-TV, KBYU-FM-Classical 89, BYU Radio, BYUtv and BYUtv International as well as the university’s broadcast-related websites.

He is a member of BYU’s External Relations Committee, serves on the BYU Magazine editorial board, and also serves on the Board of the National Educational Television Association.

Marquis graduated from BYU in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in communica­tions with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. He received his MBA from the Marriott School of Management in 2003.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
