Magic shows, demonstrations, ice cream at BYU's Chem Week Oct. 21-26

Magic shows, ice cream and fascinating presentations — from Oct. 21-26, there will be something for the whole family during Brigham Young University's Chem Week sponsored by the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

All events are free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Monday, Oct. 21 at 6 and 6:30 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday, Oct. 22–25, at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. in W111 and W112 Ezra Taft Benson Building there will be a Chemistry Magic Show focused on getting children interested in chemistry. However, it’s not just for kids, as there will be a bit of chemistry magic for every age group.

Quick-frozen ice cream made using liquid nitrogen will be served before and after the shows, and Y-Chem will also be serving ice cream from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. daily throughout the week in the west wing of the Benson Building.

The Central Utah Chapter of the American Chemical Society, which includes BYU, organizes activities for National Chemistry Week locally, following this year’s national theme, “Energy Now and Forever!”

The chapter will host a series of short presentations about the future of energy preservation Tuesday, Oct 22, at 4 p.m. in W140 Benson Building.

For those who would like to see more than just changing colors and explosions at the magic shows, there will also be poster presentations in the Benson Building lobby highlighting research from each of the chemistry labs at BYU Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24-25, ending with a reception Friday from 4-6 p.m.

A hands-on chemistry workshop will take place at the Provo City Library Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1–3 p.m. for pre-kindergarten through elementary school-age children.
