Looking for activities? BYU museums, services post holiday hours

Museums, services and facilities at Brigham Young University will have special hours for the holiday period between semesters Dec. 17-Jan. 3. Students, faculty and the community should also note the extra days of semester break Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 2-3,  before winter semester 2012 starts Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Museum of Art

• Closing early Dec. 24 and 31 at 4 p.m.

• Closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

• Regular hours other days: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The museum is closed Sunday. Admission to all exhibits is free. For more information and a list of available exhibits, visit moa.byu.edu.

Museum of Peoples and Cultures

• Closed Dec. 22-26.

• Regular hours other days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. The museum is located at 700 N. 100 East, Provo. Admission is free.

• Exhibits include “Beneath Your Feet: Discovering the Archaeology of Utah Valley” and “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya.” For more information, visit mpc.byu.edu.

Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

• Closed Dec. 24-Jan. 2.

• Regular hours other days: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is always free. The museum is located southeast of the Marriott Center. For more information, visit mlbean.byu.edu.

Education in Zion exhibit

• Closed Dec. 22-26.

• Regular hours : Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Monday and Wednesday evenings until 9 p.m.; and Saturday,  10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit lib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzion/.

BYU Bookstore

• Closing early Dec. 24 at 4 p.m.

• Open Dec. 27-30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wilkinson Student Center

• The Wilkinson Student Center will have regular hours except Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, when it will close at 6 p.m.

• Regular hours other days: Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m. to midnight; Saturday, 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Wilkinson Student Center Barbershop

• Closed Dec. 24-26 and Jan. 1.

Wilkinson Student Center Campus Craft and Floral

• Closed Dec. 24-Jan. 2

Wilkinson Student Center Cougar Creations Copy Center

• Open Dec. 19-22, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Closed Dec. 22-27

Wilkinson Student Center Games Center

• Closing early at 5 p.m. Dec. 23

Wilkinson Student Center Outdoors Unlimited Equipment Rental

Harold B. Lee Library

• Opening later and closing early Dec. 18 through Dec. 22, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. All services will be available during these hours, including Special Collections.

• Closed Dec. 23-26 and Dec. 30-Jan. 2. As always, the library remains closed Sundays, except for the Family History Library which is open on the second and fourth Sundays for family history research. View all library holiday hours at lib.byu.edu/hours_vac.php.

BYU study shows that even one act of kindness per week improves wellbeing for individuals, communities

Have you felt uplifted through a simple smile, help with a task or a positive interchange with someone — even a stranger? Kindness works both ways. A new study conducted by BYU researcher Julianne Holt-Lunstad finds that offering a single act of kindness each week reduced loneliness, social isolation and social anxiety, and promoted neighborhood relationships.

From Tony Hawk Pro Skater to Minecraft, these humanities professors want students to study (and play) video games

Humanities professors Michael Call and Brian Croxall have introduced a new video gaming initiative to BYU’s campus. With the support of the College of Humanities, students gather each Monday at 4:00 p.m. in the Humanities Learning Commons for a short faculty lecture about the video game of the week. The game is then available to play throughout the week. Beginning with Stardew Valley and Minecraft, the highlighted games and analyses are continuing through the semester.
