"Lighter of Lamps" theme for 2006 BYU Homecoming Activities

Brigham Young University is celebrating Homecoming with a week that begins with rousing opening ceremonies Tuesday, Oct. 17 and ends Saturday, Oct. 21 with a football game against the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and a centennial hike on Y Mountain.

Wedged between are student noonday activities, lectures, dances, an alumni dinner, the Homecoming Spectacular, a parade, Cougar Run, baby contest, free pancake breakfast and True Blue Football. All activities support the 2006 theme, "Lighter of Lamps."

Audiences at the Marriott Center Tuesday at 11 a.m. will be introduced to Homecoming with opening ceremonies that feature the Cougar Marching Band, a tribute to the 2006 Founder, Alice Louise Reynolds, and a sampling of the entertainment extravaganza, "Homecoming Spectacular."

Following the opening ceremonies, students will be given a free lunch at Brigham's Square. A scheduled event to Hike and Light the Y on Tuesday has been canceled. Weather conditions have created safety hazards on the mountain.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Block Y, and a second hike, called "Sunset on the Y," has been added for alumni and friends. It will begin following the Saturday football game if weather permits.

BYUSA has planned noon activities in Brigham Square Wednesday through Friday as well as a baby pageant Wednesday night in the WSC Terrace. Two nights of homecoming dances Friday and Saturday, and, "True Blue Football," a blue foam football game, Friday at 4 p.m. in Helaman Field are included in the festivities.

Every college will sponsor an Honored Alumni Lecture on Thursday at 11 a.m. "Homecoming Spectacular" will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center on Thursday and Friday.

There will also be an annual dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the WSC Ballroom.

Saturday events will start with a free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at various locations around campus followed by kids' races at 8:15 a.m. The "Cougar Run" will start at 8:45 a.m. at the BYU track. The Homecoming Parade will begin at 9 a.m with BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble founder Mary Bee Jensen as grand marshall, and the football game will begin at 1 p.m. in LaVell Edwards Stadium.
