Lee Library papyri subject of BYU lecture Oct. 21

Lincoln H. Blumell, a visiting assistant professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, will be speaking Thursday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. in 3716 Harold B. Lee Library.

Blumell’s presentation is titled “Bits, Scraps and Pieces: A Sondage of the BYU Papyri, Parchments and Ostraca in the Harold B. Lee Library” and is hosted by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

A former faculty member at Tulane University, Blumell has a primary focus in ancient Christianity and Greek and Coptic papyrology. He also has a forthcoming book called “Lettered Christians: Christians, Letters and Late Antique Oxyrhynchus” and has a number of refereed publications in various journals and edited volumes

Blumell received a Nibley Fellowship from BYU’s Neal A. Maxwell Institute while studying early Christianity in the Department and Centre for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2000 and received a bachelor’s degree in classical and early Christian studies with honors and a master’s degree in religious studies, with specialization in Western religions, from the University of Calgary. He also earned a master’s in Jewish studies from Christ Church College at the University of Oxford and a doctorate in religious studies and ancient Christianity from the University of Toronto.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
