Lee Library adds more computers to Information Commons, other areas

In response to student requests for more Information Commons space, the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University is installing 12 new computers to the commons and additional tables and computers throughout the building before Thanksgiving.

"The Information Commons concept has been very successful and the need for more collaborative work stations is apparent," says Terry Dahlin, assistant university librarian for public services.

Since its opening last winter, the Harold B. Lee Library's Information Commons has become one of the most popular places to study at BYU. This popularity stems from a nontraditional library environment where students can gather to discuss and complete projects with the help of technology and personal library service.

In addition to the Information Commons, the Periodicals area will also receive 14 more computers and the Social Science area will receive eight. General use computers will soon be found in the Periodicals, Asian, Humanities and Juvenile Departments of the library.

"These computers will be added to expand the services the library offers to its students, thus giving them what they want and need," says Randy Olsen, university librarian.
