Laura Padilla-Walker, associate professor in the School of Family Life, will speak at a Brigham Young University forum Tuesday, July 26, at 11:05 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Walker’s address, “Seize the Day: A Proactive Approach to Parenting Teens,” will cover how current and future parents and leaders can proactively help teenagers navigate the difficulties of the adolescent  years.

The forum will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Rebroadcast and archive information will be available at byub.org/BYUforum or speeches.byu.edu.

Walker has been a member of the BYU faculty since 2005. She is a primary investigator in the Flourishing Families Project as well as Project READY, both of which give her the opportunity to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Prior to joining the BYU faculty, she was a graduate instructor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for five years.

Her primary research interests include the role of socialization with parents, media, siblings and grandparents on the positive development of adolescents, as well as the parent-child relationship and positive development during emerging adulthood.

Walker has published numerous journal articles in the areas of proactive parenting, the bidirectional nature of the parent-child relationship, the development of prosocial behavior, the role of media on positive development, effective parenting during emerging adulthood and how positive development is fostered during the emerging adult years.

Walker received master’s and doctoral degrees in developmental psychology from the University of Nebraska‒Lincoln and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Central Michigan University.
